“I was
privileged to work with LA(AH) REVELL in the Hangar Party of HMS HERMES
during the Falklands War. Quiet, unassuming yet extremely efficient at
his job, DAVID epitomised the type of leadership that resounds
throughout the proud tradition of our Service and Branch, additionally
he showed a prodigious knowledge of the causes and political initiatives
of the predicament in which we found ourselves.
Throughout our many conversations on the subject it became apparent that
DAVID held our political leader in high esteem.
On our
return to Portsmouth, the Prime Minister flew onboard HERMES before we
entered harbour with a view to talking to some of the many people
onboard in order to offer her personal thanks for a job well done.
It was my
job to introduce Mrs THATCHER to the Hangar Party, assembled in their
finery with their minds, I dare say, on other imminent matters, I was
told by Captain MIDDLETON not to detain her unnecessarily because the
visit was overrunning.
When she
arrived alongside DAVID, I stopped her and said, “Ma’am, I would like
you to meet one of your most ardent fans.”
The
introduction resulted in an animated ten minute conversation between
DAVID and the PM and not a few daggers from the Captain in my general
direction.”
